Comics Legend Julius Schwartz

He started or promoted the careers of dozens of comic book artists and writers, and helped create thousands and thousands of comic book plots, scripts, and pages of art. He is pioneer and legendary comic book editor Julius Schwartz.

Born in 1915, Schwartz began his amazing career by co-founding The Time Traveler with Mort Weisinger. It was the first Science Fiction fanzine with national readership. He established himself as the literary agent for some of the most successful SF writers including Edmond Hamilton, Otto Binder, Al Bester, Manly Wade Wellman, Henry Kuttner, Robert Bloch, C. L. Moore, H. P. Lovecraft, and Stanley Weinbaum. He entrenched himself in the comics Hall of Fame when he joined the staff of All-American/National/DC Comics as one of the first editors in what would become the most popular artform in the world.

Schwartz also won the Comics Fandom’s Alley Award (Best Editor, 1962), ACBA Award for Superior Achievement (1972), and the hearts and imaginations of hundreds of millions of comics fans who may have never known his name.

For decades, Schwartz’s editorial direction set the tone for many comics titles through his life philosophy and personal interests, through hundreds of idea sessions with writers, and through the writers and artists he hired and brought together as artistic teams. It was undeniably Schwartz who added SF elements to almost every title he edited. His style still influences the artform today.

Schwartz’s comics work includes: All-Star Comics, western, Mystery in Space, Strange Adventures, Justice League of America, Green Lantern, Flash, Batman, Detective Comics, Superman, World’s Finest, and much more (All American group, 1940s/DC Comics 1944 — ). He wrote text pieces for comics in 1949, and Johnny Thunder in 1946.

The work of Julius Schwartz in highly recommended.

Some older comics are expensive or difficult to locate. Price guides or comics dealers help. Comics shops, conventions, mail order companies, and trade journals are good sources. Prices vary; shop around.
